A father's quest to overcome childhood selective mutism becomes a mission to help his daughter—and countless others—find their voice.
For over two decades, Suhail Ahmed carried a silent burden—a childhood diagnosis that never came. Selective mutism, a condition rendering him speechless in specific situations, left him labeled shy, defiant, or ill-mannered. Only in 2024, when his daughter exhibited similar symptoms, did Ahmed finally uncover the truth behind his lifelong struggle.
Growing up in Karachi, Ahmed recalls teachers scolding him for not answering questions, peers mocking his silence, and family members attributing it to rudeness. “I wasn’t being difficult,” he says. “My voice simply wouldn’t come out in certain places.” Without a diagnosis, he developed coping mechanisms—avoiding social gatherings, relying on written communication, and internalizing shame.
When his five-year-old daughter began showing signs of selective mutism in 2023, Ahmed refused to let history repeat itself. Leveraging his own experiences, he sought specialized therapy, adapted parenting strategies, and created safe spaces for her to express herself. “I didn’t want her to spend 20 years searching for answers I could provide,” he explains.
Today, Ahmed advocates for awareness through workshops, online resources, and support groups. His efforts have reached over 2,000 families across Pakistan, offering tools to navigate a condition affecting an estimated 1 in 140 children. Collaborating with psychologists, he’s developing culturally sensitive interventions, ensuring no child endures the isolation he once did.
